47829 – Swindon – New St – Sheffield

25322 – Sheffield – Edale – Manchester Vic – Bolton – Darwin – Blackburn – Hellifield

47829 – Hellifield – Skipton – Shipley – Bradford FS

25322 – Bradford FS – Leeds – York – Sheffield (250 rat miles)

47829 – Sheffield – New St – Swindon

Not unexpected,  as it was booked on the now ridiculous sectorised railway, 47829 strummed in with the Sulzer Salute Railtour en route from Swindon to Hellifield. In me and Steve’s booked coach there was no atmosphere, “perhaps it’ll pick up with the “rat” up front” i quiped, it didn’t!

At Sheffield 47829 was removed for 25322 “Tamworth Castle” to work forward. A bit of thrash could be heard as we climbed over Edale, a photo stop at a still unspoilt “real” Manchester Victoria allowed a welcome leg stretch.  Once past Bolton 25322 began to chatter nicely on the long climb to Blackburn with snow, quite thick on the ground. Past Clitheroe and into Hellifield where once again we had a lengthy photo stop in the snow with freedom to wander where you want. 47829 had followed the tour from Sheffield and was coupled to the rear of the stock at Hellifield.

47829 strummed South to Bradford FS from where now in darkness we took a long rather dull and overlong route back to Sheffield via Leeds and York with a 2020 arrival at Sheffield. From here it was farewell to “Tamworth Castle” and 47829 back to New St.

On my notes from the time i rated the tour as just 6 out of 10, not helped by that long, dark Bradford FS – Sheffield return run which was a bit of a drag, as was much of the tour…

47339 and 31168 by Manchester Victoria’s West box as 25322 waits departure time with the tour

25322 during the photostop and reversal at Hellifield with the tour

Plenty Pennine snow at Hellifield as railtour participants wander all over the place!

The dull 47829 awaits departure time with the tour as the light fades at Hellifield
