All aboard the Hatters football special to Sunderland with a good  20 spotters tagging along for the ride.

CW’s 1855 provided the haulage, of note en route were Southern Region 4 CORS awaiting scrap near Beighton, and 7 locos on Hartlepool.

We terminated at little Seaburn station which was nearer Roker Park for the footy. The police escort were amused 30 or so from the football special remained on the platform for the 5 Car Metro Cammel unit to Newcastle!

Our permit visit of Gateshead depot saw 39 locos with the local 03’s all cops, as were rare (to us) class 24 “skinheads” 5108 and 5109. Newcastle station which apart from many, many DMUs delivered more class 03, 08, 31, 37, 40, 46, 47 and 3 Deltics.

A DMU back to Seaburn, keeping clear of some “bovver” from home hooligans “escorting” the Luton fans back to the station. A dark return journey, our efforts to join the fans for a beer in the buffet were thwarted by a Hatters steward shouting we were under age, well only by 3 years!

For the record Luton beat Sunderland 2-0! Attendance was 13, 394 of which 500 were Hatters fans.
