Oct 23rd dawned dark the skies gradually becoming slate grey as i awaited the 310 down at the station. 310069 arrived right time and the power car was joined for the usual acoustics. Tony fresh off his Cravens unit from Bedford joined me at Bletchley.
We headed North oblivious that around an hour later a down freight would derail under Bletchley flyover causing much chaos!
From New St a tram to Derby, for 45109 on a rake of Mk 1’s for the short run to Long Eaton. We were Toton bound and having been there 9 years earlier i thought i knew the way from Long Eaton station. We were soon hopelessly lost with a few locals helping us in the right direction. Then from high on a busy dual carriageway embankment was Toton yards and depot…………………………..
We clambered down the bank and camped out by the road leading to the depot, a 3 hour session at the North end of the depot produced the following power…44 locos, unforgettable!.

A DMU returned us to Derby where 40186 was returning light from Spondon after dropping off its oil train. 45016 steaming nicely on load 12 returned us to New St for our 310 unit home. The clear up from the derailment at Bletchley was just about visible as we passed by on the up fast. Back then the railway just kept on moving whatever the problem…
