“Westerns” on class One at Birmingham stations 1962-2026

Part One – Snow Hill

For the commencement of the accelerated express services between Paddington, Birmingham SH, Wolverhampton and Chester in July 72.  13 “Western” class 2,700hp were available and an observer at Wellington recorded all, bar one principal expresses were Western hauled by June 72. Most were Western hauled between Shrewsbury and Paddington, although some loco changes occurred at Wolverhampton LL. 

Prior to this a “Western Week” with 1002 in April 62 on display at Birmingham Snow Hill to show off the shiny new power about to feature on Snow Hill’s express services

Sadly all long distance services through Birmingham Snow Hill rerouted through by now electrified Birmingham New St in March 67. Whilst “Westerns” quickly became regular visitors to New St, the likes of Snow Hill and  Moor St had to await the return of 1015 to the mainline to once again reverberate to Maybach music.
