On a dreary cold Luton morning, I began the trip on 0818 to Sheffield. On the Sheffield-Retford line saw 3 of the new class 56’s which seem fair machines. Things got better still with 40075 between Leeds and Skipton and 40078 between York and Leeds. At Leeds City i froze to death until getting Doncaster train. Freight abounded here and met a fellow night basher from Bolton.

A Summer Saturday to remember. It began with just 2 hours sleep on the 0500 Whitby DMU from Darlington and back. Approaching Middlesboro docks on the return run 100 odd crew of the RN ship all saluted as we passed!! The scenery between York and Darlington is already getting very familiar, met 2 York bashers on this route with NB’s 37086 and 40137 the best. My second last duff, 47374 was viewed at York depot whilst behind 37086. Saturday evening saw acute starvation so Doncaster’s Kentucky was visited. Left books on train at Hull for 03 haulage to the coach sidings, a guard kindly returned them for me.

Camped out the night until 2am in York waiting room which was nice and warm. Then down to Doncaster and Cleethorpes where awoken at 6am on a freezing, bitter morning with the tide full in. Then back to the warmth of a DMU and an enjoyable day taken at a relaxed pace. As a fill in took a Leeds-Barnsley-Sheffield DMU which was a nice run but the lack of proper sleep is beginning to hit.

A long stint at York waiting room till 4am then up to Darlington then the Whitby job again. The guard had a few words re my sleep move, “we’ve had a few do it” he laughed. A one hour 8-9am freight block at Thornaby station was one to remember. Mainly a spotting day today as a DMU bashed up to Hartlepool and then Stockton. Scored 40029 on the Skipton run too.

This morning was the longest day and was awake to view it fully light by 0345 before sleeping all the way to Whitby and back again. Services were in chaos because of a freight train derailment between Durham and Newcastle with all services being diverted via Eaglescliffe. Travelled on the “Silver Jubilee” from York and then boarded a later train at Eaglescliffe. Fell asleep straight away and was most annoyed waking up on the Tyne Bridge. Newcastle’s freights appeared to be on holiday so only DMU copped until a Plymouth lad suggested a Tyne Yard visit. This was a great place with friendly locals who tried and failed to get us round the small depot.20210/214 off a freight from Tinsley was well received. Then returned South behind good old 47420 to Doncaster.

Overnight job to Hull behind 31272 then cross country to Huddersfield where 40084 arrived with ETH coffin stock for the London portion. We passed Healey Mills then leapt at Wakefield Kirkgate. A superb freight block with 3 cop class 40’s to help rid my lack of sleep. Here also some Yorkshire humour, the second man on 37094 leant out as I photted the beast to enquire “is it going to be in Yorkshire Post?”. Then up to Thornaby which was dead and then back to York for a midnight cup of tea.

A long spell at Doncaster until 0400 was a good one, freights ruled galore and the spectacle of 40006 and 40194 double heading a mixed freight in the gloom the best. Then to Hull, Leeds, Wakefield and Doncaster for a DMU to Sheffield. At Doncaster awaiting the DMU, as always happens was forced to turn down cop Deltic 55015. On the return journey home there was little to rave about, a HST at Derby did not impress one bit.
