Much variety- July 30 and 31 moves, 1983
Saturday July 30th
I joined the overnight at Haymarket to get a reasonable seat before the hordes incl many German Interailers piled on at Waverly. Further South with 47406 storming round the curves at Dunbar a metal framed rucksack fell onto some sleeping Jock’s head. Without a word Jock proceeded to pull down all the remaining rucksacks from the nearby racks without even a murmur from their terrified German owners!
After a Doncaster bail, it was a cart to Sheffield where a mass group of bashers were assembled on the footbridge steps, Every snippet of gen was passed on, unlike the footbridge gen scene at New St where some “main men” were often less forthcoming, especially the Gloucester/Cheltenham based “gods!!!”.
With just the “Sheffield – Blackpool” yet to be allocated, dud but large 47372 was taken to Nottingham for a required 31113 forward to Peterborough. Namer 47077 “North Star” was joined here on the Brum-Yarmouth, for what i think was a busy crew change only stop. 37046 and 37098 were the afternoon beasts and i was to eventually end up on a comfortable “Trans Pennine” DMU through the Hope Valley for “cans” home from Manchester.
A reasonable day with 12 locos sampled ( newies underlined) with 37098 on the ECML the highlight.

Sunday July 31st
Awaiting the 310 at Leighton our local senior railman “Cliff” advised me of a booked down line isolation North of Bletchley. Cliff’s gen, was as ever, spot on and there was an impressive line of drag power in Bletchleys platform 6. This included 2 single and a pair of “rats” and 47093.
25266, then 25079/25176 were raked in on Bletchley – Rugby “drags” and 310073 was joined at Rugby for a “safe” plus 20 onto 25265 on the last drag. off the Keynes. Unfortunately a traction motor fire on the 310 whilst standing at Northampton saw me literally hauled out of the power car by the ever miserable Northampton station supervisor. All a very “OTT” as the “fire”, was just a smoking traction motor.
After a prolonged flap for a replacement unit and reversal because of an isolated crossover South of the station we were 30 late off Northampton. (not good going for a plus 20!)
Inevitably we crossed 25265 and its train in tow at Roade, much gnashing of teeth. At Nottingham later in the evening vast crowds were out for the evening 20’s. 20172/20163 took me to Leicester whilst the Stranraer/F.William was joined at Nuneaton where a seat was just bagged on a very wedged train with people dossed in doorways, under tables and in the corridors…Every Mk I must have a few travellers tales perhaps!
An excellent day with 10 locos sampled ( newies underlined) with solo 25266’s drag (on load 12 plus dead “seven” via Weedon the highlight.
