Ped bashing, Sep 85

“Ped bashing”, Tues September 3rd 1985

Memories from the day

A day off work allowed a rare mid week blast on an East Mids rover. At Leighton station around 5am the legendary  1A23 0350 Euston – Bletchley “milk empties” could be seen on approach. Very wide loco headlights meant bad news, yes it was a “can” and a rancid 86’2 too. This wasn’t a suprise as the diagram mid week saw the loco working a morning”Cobbler” off Northampton. Anyway the “can” was flagged for the 310 unit behind on the 0524.

A 104/110 DMU down a misty branch for a tram to Leicester. I was hoping for a “Peak” on the Leicester – Leeds, but alas today it was 47628. Then it was a good few hours on the new “ped” turns on the Manchester – Cleethorpes. 8 “peds” were raked in, all eh but there was little festering at the likes of Mexborough and Conisborough. A tram South from Sheffield saw the 1321 Norwich – Birmingham raked in which at least had a former steamer in 31294 up front.

At Nuneaton 86230 was laughed at on the Blackpool – Euston, the following Stranraer – Euston was always a good bet for a “roarer” as it was the engine off the 05blip  Euston – Stranraer vans.  The big yellow front of 85026 got a cheer on approach and was duly joined. A protracted stop at Rugby eventually saw 26 being failed. Rugby did us a favour in kicking out 81018 forward. A screaming “fish” down Weedon way was the last loco of an enjoyable day.

47628 in celebration GW 150 livery had returned to Sheffield from Leeds in this afternoon centre road view on 030985

Every picture tells a story, the dolly is off for 85026 to be removed after failing at Rugby with the 1100 Stranraer – Euston on 030985. Fortunately 81018 was the replacement loco.
