Class 46’s on the Marches
For many, the fact that class 46’s were once common on the Marches line passenger services will come as a surprise. From 1976 when the Marches went from a mix of DMU/hauled operation to solid loco haulage saw a variety of power on these services with class 25’s dominant.
However 2 trains were heavier conveying 3 or 4 vans in addition to the 2-7 Mk I’s normally conveyed. The famous 1V51 0147 Crewe – Cardiff overnight was booked a type 4 due the heavy van/passenger consist. 1M82 2005 Cardiff – Crewe was also booked a type 4. 1V51 was booked for the loco off 4M05 1245 Penzance – Crewe vans. Normally with an engine change at Plymouth, sometimes using the loco off 1B24 0756 Cardiff – Plymouth. This was often a class 46, class 45’s were virtually unknown on Marches services though.
So 1V51 and to a lesser degree 1M82 were regularly worked by class 46 across the Marches and on occasions the normal daytime load 5-7 Marches services.
From 1976 – 1981 as listed below a good few 46’s worked passenger services on the Marches, a few annoying gaps where no recorded services are as yet are recorded but i’m sure more gen will eventually fill these gaps, contributions welcome!.
Also preserved and mainline passed “Ixion” 46035 has worked a few Marches rugby additionals and football specials in 1999, lets hope 46035 returns to the Marches again soon to keep that long tradition of class 46’s on the Marches.
