Driver Mick’s work moves 1982

Bedford driver “Mick Lewis’s” sample loco moves 1982

Thanks to Mike Lewis for compiling and researching some of his late father’s 1982 work moves. This gen and Driver Phil’s (another Bedford driver/secondman) 1982 work moves give a very detailed insight into many of the local turns on the Midland 1982. Sadly Mick and Phil are no longer with us….

Monday 4 January 1982

45114 2C11 1159 St Pancras to Bedford.

Without the TT I don’t know if this was vice unit or some additional service at the end of the holiday season.

Late January my dad worked 2C22 1758 St Pancras to Bedford and signed off so no record of what happened to the stock.

However, he was on the 1758 in February and this time he worked the stock into the carriage sidings. He also worked 2C12 0638 to St Pancras a fair bit in February.

Friday 26 March 1982

45069 light 2255 Luton to Toton via Manton. Somehow he got to Derby to work 31231 light 0255 Derby to Leicester.

Good Friday 9 April 1982

25069/243 light Bedford to Cricklewood.

25245/210 light Cricklewood to Bedford.

Tuesday 13 April 1982

45007 5C10 1008 St Pancras to Cricklewood ecs.

Wednesday 14 April 1982

45006 5C10 1023 St Pancras to Cricklewood ecs

It is possible both 45’s arrived on passenger services.

Monday 19 April 1982

45003 light Bedford to Cricklewood.

Monday 26 April 1982

47186 6M32 Bedford to Leagrave loaded stone then light to Luton.

47186 6V67 Luton to Brent stone empties.

This was the only time my dad worked the Westbury stone that year. Clearly after the Westerns had gone he lost all interest in the train.

Friday 30 April 1982

45143 5G18 Cricklewood to St Pancras.

45132 2G21 1754 St Pancras to Bedford.

45132 5G88 ecs 1903 Bedford to Wellingborough to Cricklewood.

He was on this turn 4-7 May 1982 and did the same moves back to Cricklewood each day before working the 2315 DMU from St Pancras.

Monday 10 May 1982

47272 light 1410 Cricklewood depot to Nottingham Station via Manton.

Wednesday 12 May 1982

45138 light 1210 Bedford to Toton via Manton.

I believe this solves the mystery of the unknown loco on the 0825 Phil did that morning. I reckon he did have 45138 as we suspect on the 0825 and it burst at Bedford so he had 25178 back on the 1000.

As we know 45138 was a bit of a pest as it had also failed at Bedford two months earlier resulting in 25283 working forward on a Derby. Tragically for Phil he had already gone home an hour earlier after he did the 1624 from St Pancras on that day.

Thursday 13 May 1982

The day after Phil worked 25178 on the 1000, my dad had it on 6F48 from the ballast pit to Loughborough via Manton and back with 6C23 Loughborough to the ballast pit with loaded stone. I think this pit was around Elstow.

Wednesday 19 May 1982

47082 6Z19 1345 Brent to Wellingborough Station oil empties.

Thursday 20 May 1982

25154 6F45 1215 Bedford to Loughborough via Manton stone empties and 6C23 1605 Loughborough to Bedford loaded stone.

Friday 21 May 1982

45046 6Z59 1425 Brent to Wellingborough coal.

Monday 7 June 1982

The same day as 25145/210 on the 0638 2C12, my dad worked 47491 on 2G17 1700 St Pancras to Bedford and took the ecs into the carriage sidings. He was on this turn all week.

Friday 18 June 1982

It appears Phil should have hung about after having 45013 to Bedford as it was declared demic so 25266 was put on top of it and worked to Leicester. Both were removed for 45056 to Derby.

Sunday 20 June 1982

Later in the evening after Phil had 46014 early doors, it worked 1P24 1925 St Pancras to Derby.

Wednesday 23 June 1982

45068/069 6C31 1657 Bedford to Radlett Redlands stone 48 wagons and 6F31 empties 1910 Radlett to Bedford.

25318 towing 56049 2345 Cricklewood to Toton then 25318 light 0330 Toton to Bedford.

Thursday 24 June 1982

25173 6C23 1728 Bedford to Brent loaded stone then light 1935 Brent to Bedford.

25285 light 2135 Bedford to Toton via Manton. No info as to how he got back to Bedford after getting there after midnight but assume via a car being provided and then 1M10.

Friday 25 June 1982

47229/45062 6C31 1607 Bedford to Radlett loaded stone then light 1745 Radlett to Cricklewood depot.

Wednesday 30 June 1982

Wednesday 28 July 1982

45132 light 1638 Bedford to Leagrave to rescue failed 1M28. 1720 Leagrave to St Pancras on load 9. Light 1840 St Pancras to St Albans and then 45132 did the 4C24 1908 parcels St Albans to Bedford. Surprised this was not a type 2.

25191 towing 45058 2150 Bedford to Toton via Manton. 25191 light 0100 Toton to Bedford.

Monday 2 August 1982

45054/45106 light 0930 Cricklewood to Toton via Manton.

Wednesday 4 August 1982

45075 0615 Bute St to Dunstable CW 4 cement wagons then 0645 light back to Bute St. 0720 Bute St to Dunstable CW 9 cement wagons then light loco to Cricklewood.

However, 45075 stopped at Harpenden and sent back to Vauxhall so it could rescue 2C20 an 8 car DMU. Departed Vauxhall 0853 and arrived St Pancras 0944. Then 5C20 1228 St Pancras to Cricklewood ecs. That took a long time to shunt release!

Now to my failing memory. A bit of a bowl out for Phil going to work on the 0615 DMU on Tuesday 10 August 1982 as 25213/181 did 2C12 0638 Bedford to St Pancras.

Monday 16 August 1982

31261 6L17 0630 Bedford to Sundon wiring train.

Tuesday 19 October 1982

Sunday 21 November 1982

47446 ecs load 8 1440 Bedford CS to Bedford Station.

45127 ecs load 9 1915 Bedford CS to Bedford Station.

I am mystified what these stock movements were for.

Monday 22 – Friday 26 November 1982 he was on 2G21 1754 St Pancras to Bedford which had 47486 on it Monday and Friday.
